- Loren Jones, a Family Care Network client and member of our Executive Committee was a featured panelist in the San Francisco AIDS Foundation's HIVision Forum: "HIV and Aging -- Now What?". This public forum recognized the fact that people living with HIV are now living longer as a direct result of availability of better treatments and addressed the unique medical, emotional and social challenges that we are only beginning to identify.
- The FCN's HIV Workshop on Wheels (HIV WOW) program coordinator Colleen Timpane, with support from FCN Program Associate Jasmine Major, presented to 11 staff members of Tri Valley Haven, a service provider to women who are domestic violence survivors. HIV WOW's goal is to reduce stigma and increase understanding about HIV in our surrounding community by providing basic HIV 101 education, medications, and services available through the Family Care Network. In addition to FCN providers presenting, an FCN client also spoke to staff about her story and how HIV intersects with domestic violence.
- Children's social worker, Peggy Macy, joined a UCSF medical team (of ASPIRE in the Positive Health Program at San Francisco General) for a 3-week trip to West Africa in May-June. This ASPIRE team travels to Cote d'Ivoire 2-3 times per year to provide continuing medical education trainings and clinical mentorship. Peggy is the first social worker to join any of the ASPIRE teams and her fluency in French (the national language) was a big asset. During her trip, she co-led trainings on various topics (e.g. psychosocial issues, disclosure, resilience) and assisted hospitals in instituting systems to improve retention in care. She also met with peer advocates and social workers to provide clinical mentorship. Peggy is now slated to return to Cote d'Ivoire in January to co-lead trainings on retention in care. She and her UCSF colleagues are currently co-creating the curriculum which they will pilot in 2-3 sites in January.
